SUSTAINABILITY
SUSTAINABILITY AT THE DAINTREE DISCOVERY CENTRE
At the Daintree Discovery Centre, sustainability is a cornerstone of our mission to protect and showcase one of the world’s most ancient and biodiverse ecosystems. Through leading environmental practices and community partnerships, we aim to preserve the rainforest while inspiring our visitors to play a role in its conservation. Our dedication has been recognised with prestigious accolades, including Advanced Ecotourism Australia Certification, Quality Tourism Accreditation and the United Nations Environment Award for Leadership in Sustainability. These honours highlight our commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship.
ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN
Our facilities are designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment. All buildings are elevated to protect fragile rainforest root systems, and no trees were removed during construction. We have incorporated natural light and cross-ventilation into the design to minimise energy use and ensure the structures remain in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.
ENERGY CONSERVATION
As an ecoBiz Star Partner, we are committed to improving energy efficiency across all aspects of our operations. By implementing sustainable energy practices, we strive to reduce our environmental footprint and demonstrate leadership in off-grid energy management.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
We actively reduce waste through comprehensive recycling programs and sustainable alternatives. Initiatives include composting organic waste, using biodegradable coffee cups and packaging and eliminating single-use plastics throughout the Centre. Through our partnership with Containers for Change, we recycle bottles and cans, donating proceeds to Rainforest Rescue to further support conservation. We also participate in Plastic Free Douglas/ Good Start for Life bottle top collection.
CARBON CONSCIOUS INITIATIVES
Our carbon offset program has made the Centre carbon neutral, or as we like to say, “carbon conscious”. We partner with Rainforest Rescue to plant trees and restore degraded habitats, creating vital wildlife corridors. This commitment ensures we actively contribute to the health and biodiversity of the Daintree Rainforest.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH
In collaboration with James Cook University, the Australian National University and other international universities, we support environmental research to understand climate change impacts on the rainforest. Projects include carbon flux monitoring and studying water use strategies in trees. Additionally, our cassowary monitoring program helps protect the habitat of this endangered species, ensuring their continued survival in the region.
VISITOR ENGAGEMENT
We believe education is key to conservation. While our dedicated sustainability exhibit highlights the unique challenges of living off-grid and demonstrates waste reduction and recycling practices, all of our exhibits work together to inspire wonder and a deeper appreciation for the rainforest. Through interactive displays, audio tours and educational programs, we aim to foster a sense of responsibility and protection in every visitor, ensuring they leave with a greater understanding of the delicate balance of this incredible ecosystem.
